Instructions of travelling With Your Watches Like A Pro

Traveling with a watch can be a straightforward task, but if you are a collector who likes to travel with even a small collection, it requires thought and planning. The considerations involved are of a type that non-watch people simply cannot comprehend. So, yes, I’m going to share some of the mental gymnastics I use when preparing for an outing, and I’m curious if you have some tips as well. As always, feel free to comment and share below.
I remember picking up a vintage Seiko 6139 chronograph that was shipped to a friend’s house (a pawn store) via an eBay seller during a visit to the US. I took it back to my hotel room and recalled that the watch started right up and ran without a problem. Heck, even the bracelet fit my slim wrist, so it seemed like the perfect dinner companion that night. However, it was August and Pennsylvania was very humid. Imagine my surprise when I emerged from the freezing cold hotel and the inside of the replica watch started to fog up because the seal was long gone. Yes, that was a unique situation, but I considered that when choosing my “only weapon” for the trip.
Would this be a beach or pool vacation? Or would I be in a seriously rainy or humid climate (for example, I’ve spent a lot of time in Asia)? Conversely, will it be very cold? When was the last time I had my watch stress tested? I consider all of these types of questions when choosing what to bring on a trip.
Then there’s the relatively recent hot topic – safety. It’s incredible to think that I rock and roll wherever I go, and before the 2019 holiday season, I had no qualms about rolling around London with my Moonlight Gold Sprint. That wouldn’t happen today. I reserved caution in known theft hotspots until violent watch crime in big cities began to escalate. Now, wherever I am, I often opt for something concealed. If it’s warm outside and I wear short sleeves, I turn it down even more. Crimes of opportunity are certainly much less common than shocking news videos would have you believe. But is it worth it to constantly look over your shoulder while moving? No. I’d rather wear something inconspicuous but cool and carefree, like a modern Aquastar or Doxa.
